Sick Deniers

    Like the Holocaust deniers, who denied that millions of Jews and others were murder and shoved into the ovens and gas chambers run by the Nazis. We now have similar deniers here in Ireland, denying that --

1. That Tuam’s Mother and Baby Home never existed.
2. That no Babies lost their lives and that the children were very happy and well fed by the Holy Nuns.
3. That there were no bodies of Babies and Children in the Septic Tanks on the convent grounds at the former Mother and Baby Home in Tuam, in County Galway, Ireland. 

    This offensive propaganda of denial is a common facet of certain Catholic Church fanatics, funded and secretly supported by the Irish Catholic Church. Tuam’s Mother and Baby Home denial is sponsored by some within the Hierarchy of the Irish Catholic Church. Recently these same deniers who now claim, either explicitly or implicitly, that Tuam’s Mother and Baby Home is a hoax, that there was never any babies or children in the Septic Tank, and certainly not the 800 discovered there or the thousands soon to be discovered, nearby. 

    First of all we need to look at who is spreading this information and why.  The scurrilous offensive propaganda was spread by a free magazine called ‘Alive! Which is a free monthly publication in the style of a newspaper which has been produced since its first edition in 1996 by the Alive Group, an organisation with an address at the Dominican Order St Mary's Priory, Tallaght in Dublin, Republic of Ireland. The current editor is a Catholic Priest, Fr Brian McKevitt, This newspaper,  ‘Alive! is printed by a printing company called Data-Scope, an independent publishing company in Enniscorthy, in County Wexford. The magazine calls for an appeal in each issue for donations totalling €160,000 annually to remain in circulation and fund the hard work of this very sick Priest.


    I myself as a Living Witness,  I personally find this offensive propaganda of denial of Tuam’s Mother and Baby Home or any other Mother and Baby Home denial deeply offensive, as does every mother, child of these horrendous Religious run Institutions. What was more offensive was that the Deniers, the Deniers came to the town of Tuam. The denial event was hosted by the sensationalist Catholic paper ‘Alive!  And I quote- (link below)

    ‘If you were eejit enough to believe the guff spouted in the Corralea Court Hotel in Tuam last weekend, the entire Tuam Babies scandal was actually a hoax perpetrated by Galway County Council in the 1970s or 1980s, when the council supposedly built in the middle of a busy housing estate, a concrete structure into which it then placed bones.’ 

    So now we have a school of stupid Catholic polemicist, supported by the Irish Catholic Church, which has sprung up, which for political reasons is bent on denying the truth and insulting the families of the babies and children disposed of by the Nuns into their Septic Tank. These twisted Catholic revisionists will continue to deny that anything bad ever happened in any of the Catholic run Institutions in Ireland. Sadly these fabrications of the revisionists have fallen on fertile ground in Ireland and abroad, mostly the United States of America. Where plausible lies of Catholic propaganda are now being circulated, and indeed will never be wholly eradicated.


    But here in Tuam’s Mother and Baby Home we will have historical truth, for it is a given that there are over 800 bodies of babies and children in the Septic Tank that was part of the Convent in Tuam’s Town. In the internet age I would say that everyone is entitled to their own opinion, that is surely true.  Freedom of speech does not include freedom to deliberately lie. Freedom of speech also includes the right to be called out on your lying and this I must do. All opinions are equal. Some opinions are backed by fact. The Catholic Church has always traded on lies, its very existence depends on it. 


    Certain things are true, like the sun rises, the seas have fishes and we need oxygen to breathe. Thousands of women and children went to their deaths in the vast slave camps of Magdalene Laundries, Industrial Schools and the Orphanages of Ireland. These women and children are buried in The Burial Pits, the Septic Tanks which can be found in all the Religious run Institutions in Ireland. Brutal genocide took place and which was sanctioned and operated by the leaders of the Irish Catholic Church. That sadly whether we like it or not is a fact and nor an opinion. To stop this offensive propaganda of lies, we need as a matter of urgency to open immediately the Septic Tanks in Tuam’s Mother and Baby Home and all the other Mother and Baby Homes, Magdalene Laundries, Industrial Schools and the Orphanages in Ireland.


    I have met many people over the last 10 years including Catholic Clerics who have said to me ‘Please don’t confuse me with the facts, I’ve made up my mind’. So I say if you try to argue with such a person who is committed to a completely illogical premise, then you’re lost to begin with — you’re already sucked into their world of hatred.


    I personally blame the Irish Press for not exposing this story of denial for what it is, I also blame the Irish Government for encouraging this mis-information by dragging their feet on exhuming the babies and children from the Septic Tanks at Tuam’s Mother and Baby Home and doing the bidding and covering up of the still powerful Irish Catholic Church, enabling them to continue sowing mis-information by their well funded Deniers, thus to negate the established facts. The Irish Catholic Church is motivated by hatred of the Survivors, the Living Witnesses by saying that we invented and exaggerated our pain and suffering in the Religious run Institutions. 


    The Irish Catholic Church persecution of the unwed women and their children began with hateful words, escalated to discrimination and dehumanisation, and the notorious pogroms which culminated in their misery and death.
At the time, the Irish Catholic Church, said --

    “We must hasten this process of unwed mothers with cold ruthlessness.” in eliminating this scourge from our pure Irish society, these unwed women, and their filth, their offsprings.’ 

    The consequences for unwed women and their children were horrific, a pogrom of suffering and death which was not limited to them.Thousands of others, women and children were victimised, displaced, trafficked, forced into slave labour camps, known as the Magdalene Laundries, Industrial Schools and the Orphanages in Ireland, many were murdered, raped, and brutalised while there. The denial or distortion of history in all the Religious run Institutions, like Magdalene Laundries, Industrial Schools and the Orphanages in Ireland, is an assault on truth and is insulting to all the Living Witnesses still alive today. Intentionally denying or distorting the historical record threatens communal understanding of how to safeguard Living Witnesses and their individual rights. Owen Felix O’Neill
